Visual illusions
The curtains are drawn, but the room is evenly lit by hidden neon lamps around the ceiling. Mirrors and charts with cryptic glyphs line the walls. In the center stands a large white table covered with shiny optical instruments and other devices. You can take a closer look.
Michael Bach
Prof. Bach is an ophthalmologist at the Universitäts-Augenklinik Freiburg and has made his profession his hobby. Visit his great site! Lots of illusions to test and marvel at, along with detailed and explanations. Here are some examples:
- Count the black dots
- Focus the cross
When you do so long enough, first a green spot running along the circle will appear, then the purple spots will disappear.
Ted Adelson
Ted Adelson is Professor of Vision Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. You can find some fine demonstrations of how illusions work on his website:
- Compare the squares A and B - Are they very different in shade? Decide and check here or here.
Akiyoshi
Akiyoshi has a very bright and colourful site with lots of illusions, such as:
- Bulging squares
- Shifting circles
- Rotating chocolates
- 3D cubes (free-fuse to see the effect)
